Dropping Pretenses
Ever since birtherism reared its ugly head four years ago, many have argued that it is really a way to couch opposition to having a Black President in an excuse that isn’t overtly racist, even though the emotions behind it are rooted in racism. When the President finally released his long form birth certificate in spring 2011 (the first time any President had to do so) many activists were...
A history on the legislation in Virginia state forcing women (including those who have been raped or had miscarriages) to have a vaginal probe (trans-vaginal sonogram) before the fetus can be aborted.

Saturday Night Live mocking Representative Darrell Issa (R-CA) for the all-male panel on access to birth control.
I thought the words “GOP War on Women” were a little strong back when people were using it last spring (because the GOP was trying to defund Planned Parenthood under Title X)… now I must agree. Recent weeks have produced the opposition to the Violence Against Women Act, the anti-contraception fight and the new law in Virginia that requires women seeking an abortion to have an...
As I explained last week, the “Now We Know” segment on MSNBC’s “Up with Chris Hayes” is my favorite part of the show. Here is video for this week’s segment (including a preview for the new eponymous show hosted by the brilliant Melissa Harris-Perry).
Some things to think about regarding SOPA and PIPA. *Note: Unlike Jon Stewart’s joke suggests, when Wikipedia went dark, they did keep 2 pages live and accessible. The pages for SOPA and PIPA were accessible that day.
I could barely wait yesterday to hear Rachel Maddow, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert to cover Foster Friess and his aspirin between the knees prescription. However, I soon learned that The Colbert Report is going on a short hiatus and that there would be no Colbert mocking Friess with relentless satire until at least Monday. Then, it turned out that, because Jon tapes so early in the day, The...
A Day of Insanity
Sometimes a ton of crazy things all happen in the same day. Today is one of those days. I am not sure if there is something in the water or if there is full moon or what is going on, but today has been one insanity after another. First, early this morning on Fox & Friends, host Eric Bolling said to Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA), the highest ranking Black female serving in the United...
Men Deciding Women's Access to Contraception
I would be steaming mad and ranting about the complete lack of females on the panel in today’s farcical hearing about a woman’s right to contraception without copay (which should no longer be an issue). But I’ve been completely deflated by Foster Freiss and his pronouncement that we should just use aspirin between our knees. I can only handle one insanity per day over...
Of all the ridiculous and humorous twists and turns this one might be the worst. Finding out that Rick Santorum’s billionaire backer apparently thinks that an aspirin between the knees is an effective method of contraception is a jaw-dropper even compared to all of the other ridiculous things that have been said and revealed this campaign season. Andrea Mitchell, justifiably stunned by...
Maloney asks, ’Where are the women?’ →
Interesting discussion about Afghanistan, the military and President Obama’s role as Commander-in-Chief.
Chris Matthews and Rachel Maddow did nice commentaries on Newt Gingrich’s dog whistles about food stamps and Black people (with a nice shout out to Ron Paul’s more obvious racism). Jon Stewart had a comedic take on it that was also genius.
I plan to post quite a few videos on the ongoing assault on voting rights in this country. This is just one I came across today.
Wow! Female Fox News pundit has some… interesting… views on the sad statistics regarding sexual assault in the military. She not only has absolutely no empathy for the victims of sexual assault and rape and makes arguments against protecting these women. She actually seems to be implying that they deserve it for joining the military in the first place.
Comedic take on the hypocrisy of people who want to impose their religious beliefs on everyone else, but cry bloody murder at the idea of having to pay for health care for their female employees that includes *gasp* the pill because it is imposing on religious freedom.
If you haven’t been paying attention to Stephen Colbert satirically skewering SuperPacs, perhaps these videos will get you interested in it.
Taxes, regulations, bigger government, soft on terror and immigration? Enh… not so much.
To My Fellow Christian Americans:
Although it has become a common belief of our fellow Christians that this country was founded based on Christianity, that is not true. Here is why.
1 - Most of the people fleeing here were fleeing England - a nation that actually was a Christian nation that had a national religion (The Anglican Church) in pursuit of religious freedom.
2 - Many of our founding founders were not only not...
I love this segment of Chris Hayes’s show. Every week he sums up what we know now that we didn’t know last week. Here is the video for today’s summary.

I’m not sure why I ever let Rick Santorum’s bigotry shock me… but, inevitably, when it roars its ugly head, I am shocked. Perhaps it is because he keeps moving from groups that more of the population considers justifiably marginalized (like gay men or Black people) to increasingly less acceptable forms of bigotry (like women). Don’t get me wrong, I consider all of his...
Today, The President announced a compromise on the free contraception issue that unnecessarily complicates things, is confusing to the public and is not going to avoid the issue being used against him. It would have been smarter to fight on behalf of women, get women the preventative care they need, get the female vote and not worry about losing the votes of conservative religious voters who...

A nice little chuckle. Happy Valentine’s Day guys!
Stephen Colbert decides if he should make a commitment to Mitt Romney.
Great segments on the free contraception for women thing that the Catholic Church opposes but a large majority of Catholic women and women employed by Catholic institutions support.

I’m a critic of Citizens United. I’m a supporter of an amendment to reverse it (among other things). I’m even (sort of) a supporter of an amendment to declare “corporations are not persons.” But I am not a supporter of any amendment that purports to declare “Money is not speech.”
My former…

The Problem with Blaming President Obama for NDAA
Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert did a wonderful job pointing out the HUGE problem that is the most recent National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012 (NDAA). (The full text of the bill may be found here or here.)
While Stewart and Colbert’s send-ups of the NDAA and the problems with it are genius, there are some basic things that we should all remember before hurling our ire at...

This is one of my favorite nighttime rituals. A good sleep mask and some yoga nidra in a suitably warm room puts me right to sleep.
